Raiders drop two more at Biola Invitational

Southern Oregon volleyball team falls to 0-4 vs. NAIA heavyweights in California

LA MIRANDA, Calif. — Two more of the top teams in the NAIA lived up to their rankings in sweeps of the Southern Oregon University volleyball team Friday at the Biola Invitational.

The Raiders fell first to No. 20 Cal-State San Marcos, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18, and finished the tournament with a 25-8, 25-15, 25-22 defeat at the hands of top-ranked Concordia (Calif.), the defending national champion.

SOU got its money's worth with one of the most demanding starts to its season in program history. A day earlier the Raiders (0-4 overall) saw No. 4 Biola and No. 16 Westmont.

They saw improved performances from a couple of their more experienced hitters on the second day, too, as Liz Madden amassed eight kills against Cal-State San Marcos and Mona Goudarzian matched her against Biola.

In both cases, though, there was too much to overcome on the other side of the net. Brooke Butler had 13 kills, Taylor DeGraff had 12 and Alyssa Foster's 27 assists helped Cal-State San Marcos (5-1) to a .269 attacking average.

Concordia presented another myriad of challenges, forcing the Raiders into 25 attacking errors and coming up with eight blocks. Jessica Israel led the Eagles (4-0) with 13 kills.

Lauren McGowne, SOU's freshman setter, had another productive day with 29 assists over the two matches. Senior libero Renee Yomtob pulled in match-high dig totals of 21 and 12.

The Raiders will make their home debut Thursday at the two-day, five-team Paul Elliott Invitational. Play will begin at 10 a.m. and the Raiders are scheduled to open at 2:30 p.m. against Simpson and 7 p.m. against Menlo.
