Dan Ralls, of Ashland, Ore., passed away at home August 4, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth; their four children; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dan was born in Los Angeles, Calif. August 21, 1931. He grew up in Pasadena, Calif., and worked in his father's businesses, developing an entrepreneurial spirit that would last his entire life. In the early 1950s, after graduating from John Muir High School in Pasadena, he attended the University of Colorado where he met Ruth, and earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration. After marrying Ruth and serving as an officer in the United States Air Force, he returned to Southern California.

Dan and Ruth raised their four children in Garden Grove, Calif. For several years, Dan worked as purchasing agent and business manager for various public and private employers. In 1965, he started an independent insurance brokerage. For the next 20 years, he sold insurance policies and gave risk management advice to hundreds of small businesses and individuals.

He was active in all manner of his children's activities and in the First Presbyterian Church of Garden Grove and the Kiwanis Club. He loved sports, and had a particular passion for coaching junior tennis.

In 1986, when their youngest child was in college, Dan and Ruth relocated to Ashland, Ore. Dan changed careers and became a developer. He developed and built the Ashland Commercial Center. Working closely with his partners, he went on to build and develop the Ashland Racquet Club (now known as Ashland Tennis & Fitness).

He was a lay leader of the First Presbyterian Church of Ashland and headed the Pastor Nominating Committee. He continued to coach junior tennis well into his 70s. In his later years, he enjoyed travel, visiting (and being visited by) his children and grandchildren, the ups and downs of the San Francisco 49ers (his adopted teamthe Rams having departed Los Angeles), and Ruth's daily, homemade cuisine. He will be missed by his many friends, business associates, and family.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland (corner of Siskiyou & Walker). In lieu of flowers, Dan would ask for contributions in his honor to your favorite charity or to his (Ashland Community Hospital Hospice or Ashland Emergency Food Bank).
