Free respirator masks available

 Posted: 5:35 PM August 08, 2013

People can pick up free respirator masks that will help block tiny smoke particles at Jackson County Public Health and Red Cross.

Red Cross, 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday.

Jackson County Public Health, 1005 E. Main St., Medford, is open from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The respirators were donated by the Red Cross and AllCare.

Public health officials recommend that people stay inside and limit outdoor activity when it is smoky. For people who must be outdoors, wearing a particulate respirator can help protect the lungs from wildfire smoke.

To effectively filter the smallest particles that can harm lungs, masks should be certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Such masks will be marked NIOSH and N95 or P100, officials said. They also must be worn correctly so they are fitted tightly to the wearer's face.
