  • Why we support short-term rentals
We are writing to lend our support for short-term rentals in single-family (R-1) areas of Ashland.
We live on a quiet street above the university. When the youngest of our five children left for college last September, we made an extra room available for short-term visitors. We are always present in our home to monitor our guests' visits and attend personally to their needs.
The entire experience has proven nothing short of delightful. Our neighbors (including a member of the City Council) were all completely unaware we were renting, as our guests are, without the slightest exception, quiet and respectful. Our visitors, all of whom shop, dine and spend their vacation dollars in Ashland, have unanimously rated their experience with us as "outstanding." Last but hardly least, the added income has provided our family with much-needed relief during this relentlessly unforgiving economy.
The use of our home in this way is similar to the legally allowed use of a home for counselors, bookkeepers and lawyers commonly found in Ashland residential neighborhoods.
Please know we want nothing more than to partner with the city to be in compliance via appropriate licensing, taxing, etc., which will also generate additional revenue for Ashland. This presents a tremendous "win-win" opportunity for Ashland, which prides itself for being on the cutting edge of progressive ideas.

    Welcome: Follow the rules, please
As we write out a four-figure insurance check and an even larger city lodging tax check and await the arrival of the county environmental health inspector, we welcome the Hogge family to the hospitality field.
Now, will they just legally obtain a city occupancy permit and license for what they are doing, pay the city lodging tax and business utility rates, obtain adequate insurance for their guests, and pass city and county safety inspections?
