State unemployment ticks up

 Posted: 12:05 PM July 16, 2013

SALEM — Oregon's jobless rate inched up a tenth of a percentage point in June, and hiring was weak.

The State Employment Department said the unemployment rate of 7.9 percent is essentially unchanged from the 7.8 percent reported in May.

The rate is based on a survey of households. Economists say such small changes are statistically insignificant until they show a trend over months.

A survey of businesses put the nonfarm payroll employment down by 1,000 jobs, the first decline since September.

The agency said revised estimates for May showed a gain that month of 4,700. The initial report was a smaller gain, 3,800.

June hiring was stronger than expected in leisure and hospitality businesses, such as restaurants and bars. It was weaker than usual in trade, transportation and utility sectors.
