GRANTS PASS — Ashland jumped out to an early lead in both games but couldn't hold on as the Grants Pass Diggers swept an American Legion A doubleheader, 11-4 and 9-6 Thursday at the All Sports Park.
In the first game, Ashland scored two runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 lead. Jack Carroll blasted an RBI double in the first and Vince Cammarota plated two with a double of his own in the second.
The Diggers cut the lead in half in the third, then scored three runs in each of the next three innings to break the game open. Cody Ekwall was 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead GP in the opener.
Ashland's Tommy Hulick pitched 42/3 innings, striking out four while surrendering seven runs, six earned.
In Game 2, Ashland scored three in the first and three in the second to take a 6-2 lead, but the Diggers exploded for four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good.
Jett Hamik was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice to pace the Pilots (0-4), while Jose Perez scored three runs and Cammarota two. Carroll had a two-run double in the first inning.
Jerry Carroll got the start for the Pilots but was pulled in the second after surrendering four earned runs. He walked seven batters before giving way to Noah Falkner, who struck out three in 21/3 innings of work.
Jarron Kroplin, the Diggers' No. 9 hitter, was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Easton Bents went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
