  • The owners of the Box R Ranch in the Greensprings area east of Ashland are closing their guest accommodations and will auction their extensive collection of Western and Native American artifacts Saturday and Sunday, June 15 and 16.
The collection belongs to ranch owners Don and Jean Rowlett, who plan to close the Box R's guest-ranch operations in September. The Rowlett's grandson, Jesse Randall, will take over ranch operations after Labor Day, according to a press release from the ranch.
Plans call for a more agricultural focus, featuring direct-to-customer sales of grass-fed beef, pastured pork and poultry, the release said.
The collection includes stagecoaches, buggies, Applegate Trail wagons used for historical re-enactments, branding irons, saddles, spurs, bits, old farm equipment, old blacksmith supplies, arrowhead points and other Native American collectibles.
Much of the collection was purchased from the estate of George McUne of Pioneer Village in Jacksonville 25 years ago, according to the release.
The Box R Ranch is located at 16799 Highway 66, 23 miles east of Ashland. An auction preview will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
Sale of the Western collections will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 15, and the Native American collections will be auctioned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 16. Food will be available on site.
