  • The Grants Pass Miners held the Ashland Pilots to five hits on the day to sweep an American Legion A doubleheader at North Mountain Park on Tuesday.
    The Miners won the first game 11-4 and the second game 8-0.
    In Game 1, Ashland's Jose Perez was 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base to lead the Pilots, who were playing their first two games of the season. Also for Ashland, Matt Flynn had a two-run single in the seventh.
    McKinnon Bennett went 3-for-3 and scored four runs to lead the Miners.
    In the second game, James Chastain and Kevin Olmstead pitched a combined one-hitter for the Miners. Ty Mullholland's single was the only hit for the Pilots.
    Ashland freshman-to-be Christopher Buckley was impressive in his pitching debut, fanning five in 22/3 innings.
