    Southern Oregon's Parks fifth in discus at NAIA nationals

  • MARION, Ind. — The men's 4x400 relay team set a program record and Danny Parks became Southern Oregon's first All-American of the season Friday afternoon at the NAIA outdoor track and field championships at Indiana Wesleyan.
    Parks gave the Raiders their first points of the meet, picking up four points with a fifth-place performance in the discus. Parks' throw of 165 feet, 9 inches earned the junior All-American honors
    The 4x400 relay team of Nick Perrino, Sullivan Stevens, Zach Boyd-Helm and Jonz Olander broke a 12-year-old school record in the event during the preliminary race to finish eighth and advance to today's final. The team's time of 3:13.64 beat the previous team mark of 3:14.63 by nearly a full second.
    Boyd-Helm had a stellar day all around, as he also finished the 800 prelims in first place with a time of 1:51.78. With the best qualifying time, he will go into today's final race as the favorite to win the national title.
    Brandon Ritchie completed his Southern Oregon career two spots out of All-American recognition, posting a career-best 6,092 points in the decathlon.
    SOU junior Mikayla Garrard finished 11th in the 400 prelims, posting a time of 57.54. Raider sophomore Jared Hixon finished 20th in the 5,000 with a time of 15:16.58.
    Basketball
    Coach Mac's Ashland Basketball Games Camp for boys and girls in grades kindergarten through eighth grade will be held June 17-21 at Ashland Middle School.
    The cost is $75, with a $10 discount for second family members.
    The camp will go three hours each day and will be run by the Southern Oregon University basketball program, including head coach Brian McDermott, who has the most coaching victories in program history.
    Camp directors will keep track of all wins and the players who tally the most wins in each age group will receive an award.
    All campers will also receive a camp T-shirt.
