Kendl Winter & Summer Gold

 Posted: 8:15 AM May 23, 2013

Running is part of Kendl Winter's creative process, and it's on one of her 18- or even 30-mile runs that she is able to connect with nature and brainstorm ideas for her music.

Last fall, Winter left The Blackberry Bushes Stringband to create her own musical identity, which she calls quirky country. She has since teamed up with K Records, a label based in Olympia, Wash., to release two, full-length albums — "Apple Core" and "The Mechanics of Hovering Flight."

A third album, "It Can Be Done," is forthcoming and more representative of the upbeat, banjo-style, nature-inspired music that she's currently playing.

As part of her 12-day West Coast tour, Winter, accompanied by drummer Austin Cooper (aka Summer Gold), will play clawhammer and three-finger styles of banjo at 9 p.m. Thursday, May 23, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant, 35 N. Main St., Ashland.

Bluegrass trio The Pine Hearts, also based in Olympia, Wash., are touring with Winter and will open the show. The cover is $3.
