Do what works to create jobs

Do what works to create jobs

Sen. Alan Bates is right to be concerned with jobs, but his citing of the official nationwide unemployment rate in April at 7.5 percent and 8 percent in Oregon sugarcoats the situation.

Those figures include only active job seekers. According to the Oregon State Employment Department, the real numbers, which include part-time workers who want and are available for full-time work and individuals who have given up looking in discouragement, are closer to 13.9 percent nationwide and 16.3 percent in Oregon, which is to say 319,200 people.

Unfortunately, the good senator's bad ideas do little to bring jobs to rural Oregonians. Is it expecting too much of Senator Bates to attend the Oregon Jobs Caucus to find out what would really help?

Middle School opened in '61

If you please, a small correction regarding the story on the Middle School fire: "...Di Chiro described the building as 'old slap-dash construction from the '70s, with no crawl space and no sprinkler system, built for the rush of baby boomers of the day ... ' ".

Actually, the junior high (Middle School) opened in the fall of 1961. Secondly, it had nothing to do with the rush of baby boomers. The old junior high (East Side School) was in serious disrepair. The top story was condemned the last year it was open, so a newer safer school was needed, baby boomers or not.

Kiwanis marks Armed Forces Day

The Ashland Kiwanis Club placed flags at businesses and other locations around town on Saturday, May 18. This was in recognition of Armed Forces Day. Based on the number of residents and tourists questioning why the flags on this day, I thought it might be appropriate to remind everyone what this day means.

Many Americans celebrate Armed Forces Day annually on the third Saturday of May. It is a day to honor Americans in uniform who served their country in times of peace and war. People who serve the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard are paid tribute for their commitments on this day. National Guard and Reserve units have the option of celebrating Armed Forces Day during any date in May, because their training schedules are often unique.
