  • The Ashland City Council will hold a public hearing and then decide whether to approve a 10 percent water rate increase, a 10 percent sewer rate increase, a 3 percent storm drain fee increase, and a 3 percent transportation utility fee increase.
    The public hearing will be held during a council meeting that starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, in the Ashland Civic Center Council Chambers, 1175 E. Main St.
    If approved, the batch of rate and fee increases would cost the average residence an extra $6.30 each month, according to city staff.
    The increases would go into effect on July 1, staff members said.
    Ashland faces years of water and sewer rate increases to meet regulatory requirements, maintain and upgrade its infrastructure, and deal with inflation.
    A resident with an average monthly water bill of $38.97 in 2013, for example, will face an average monthly bill of $65.52 in 2022, according to a city table of projected rate increases.
    In other business on Tuesday night, the council will:
    • hear a presentation about The League of American Bicyclists designating Ashland as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community;
    • consider granting an extension on a Verde Village Subdivision development agreement;
    • consider endorsing a plan to install historic markers and public art in town, with cost estimates ranging from $53,500 to $145,000, depending on the extent of the program.
