The Suncrest rest area near Talent on I-5 will be closed until about 6 p.m., according to Fire District 5 Captain Jim Campbell, while a hazardous material cleanup takes place. At about 10:30 a.m., a truck driver with a load of 4,400 gallons of formaldehyde, noticed a leak while stopped to do a safety check. After finding that some of the formaldehyde had come out of overflow hoses the fire department was called in to make sure the leak was contained. Less than 6 ounces had spilled at the rest stop. The rest area was evacuated and by 2 p.m., crews were standing by for a clean up crew from Roseburg to arrive that would cleanse the affected area so that the rest stop could be re-opened. One engine from Fire District 5 responded and was aided by three crew members from Medford Fire hazmat. The rest area should be clean and open by 6 p.m., said Campbell.
