She is named volunteer of the year for her work at several organizations

Community volunteer Roberta Stebbins has been given the city of Ashland's volunteer-of-the-year award.

Ashland City Council President Mike Morris presented Stebbins with the James M. Ragland Memorial Ashland Volunteer Spirit Community Service Award on Tuesday night during a council meeting.

"Congratulations, Roberta, and thank you for all your hard work," Morris said.

Her many contributions include volunteering with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Tudor Guild, helping people with their taxes via the AARP, and serving on the city's Citizens Budget Committee, Morris said.

Stebbins said she was surprised to receive the volunteer award in a town that is so filled with volunteers.

"They're everywhere you look. They're everywhere you need help," she said.

Stebbins said while people may be frustrated by the larger political system, she said Ashland has a good system, and it's working well.

She said there are a plethora of ways to get involved in Ashland, and the town's small character allows people to be aware of each other's contributions.

Stebbins said volunteerism makes up the fabric of the community, noting that many of the people in attendance at Ashland's council meeting were volunteers themselves.

"It is on behalf of all of you that I can accept this award," she said.
