Risk of frost threatens gardens, crops

 Posted: 4:25 PM April 16, 2013

Widespread frost and freezing temperatures that could harm plants are expected overnight, weather forecasters report.

The National Weather Service office in Medford issued a freeze warning that will be in effect from 2 to 8 a.m. Wednesday in Medford, Phoenix, Talent, Ashland, Eagle Point, Jacksonville and the Applegate Valley. A frost advisory will be in effect during that period in Grants Pass and isolated locations in the Medford area.

A cold low pressure system is leaving the region, decreasing cloud cover tonight and Wednesday morning, forecasters explained. Under cold, clear skies, overnight low temperatures will dip to 27 to 34 degrees early Wednesday morning.

Sensitive plants could be damaged or killed if left unprotected under these conditions, the warnings state.
