Gerry O'Beirne

 Posted: 8:30 AM April 11, 2013

Thanks to a little Irish luck, Ashland musician Jeff Jones was on holiday in Dingle, Ireland, the same time Dublin-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Gerry O'Beirne.

"I went and heard him in this 200-year-old rock church, St. James, and it was just him, and it was beautiful," Jones says.

Jones, with his Ashland project, the Foxfire Trio, had recorded one of O'Beirne's songs, "Western Highway," and he was glad for the chance to see the artist in concert.

O'Beirne plays six- and 12-string guitars, tiple (a 10-string mandolin) and ukulele, among other instruments. His original music is rooted in the Irish folk tradition but features contemporary chord structures and subject matter, as well as influences from all the places where he's lived.

He makes his Ashland debut at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, at The Playwright Public House, 258 A St. The cover to the acoustic show costs $5. Call 541-488-9128.
