Crater softball team tops Ashland in six innings

Comets finish game early by mercy rule; AHS girls tennis team edges GP

CENTRAL POINT — Malorie Mitchell had two hits for Crater, including a two-run triple in a four-run sixth inning as the Comets beat Ashland 12-2 in six innings in a nonleague prep softball game Tuesday at Crater High School.

The game ended in the sixth when No. 3 hitter Katie Britton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to complete the rally.

Crater (5-8) received two hits and two RBIs from Bri Doggett and Alex Craft added two hits and scored twice.

The Grizzlies (3-11) next take on Southern Oregon Hybrid 5A rival Eagle Point on Saturday. Game 1 of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 10 a.m. at North Mountain Park.

At Grants Pass, Ashland No. 4 singles player Kai Weston won a marathon match against Ben Widdison of Grants Pass, 7-5, 5-7, 13-11, to help Ashland secure a 4-4 nonleague tie with Grants Pass on Tuesday.

Girls Tennis

At Grants Pass, Ashland's No. 2 doubles team of Katy Barnard and Elana Cooper rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the third set to beat Brittany Blacksmith and Maria Palamino, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, and clinch for the Grizzlies a 5-3 team win over Grants Pass on Tuesday.

Ashland's Cass Christopher overcame an early deficit to beat Natasha Matola, 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles match.
