  • Dr. Richard Allen Hill, D.V.M. passed away at his home in Ashland, Ore., March 22, 2013. Born in Klamath Falls, Ore., June 10, 1934, Richard married Joan, his high school sweetheart July 26, 1953.
    After his mother's death from polio in 1952, Richard left college at Oregon State University to farm with his father Ralph. He later farmed and ranched in Bonanza before he, Joan and the kids moved to Pullman, Wash. where Richard completed his doctor of veterinary medicine in 1969. After practicing a year in Hillsboro, Ore., Richard and family moved to Ashland where he practiced until his retirement in 2006. He treated animals large and small, wild and domestic, ostriches and emus.
    An avid sportsman and conservationist, Richard hunted, fished, hiked, rafted, and canoed throughout Oregon and the Northwest. In 2009 he joined his son's family and all of the grandchildren for another Bowron camping adventure in British Columbia. Richard loved following high school sports and particularly the Ashland Grizzlies, and recently the Miami Heat with his daughter, Lois.
    He is survived by his wife, Joan Gail Hill, Ashland, Ore.; brother, Robert Hill, M.D., Bend, Ore.; sister, Jeannie Arant, Klamath Falls, Ore.; children, Lois Ruth Hill, Weston, Fla., Sharon K. Hill, Portland, Ore., and Russel Allen Hill and wife, Jody, Walla Walla, Wash.; grandchildren, Stephen Patrick Unger and Stephanie Joan Unger, Weston, Fla., and Ryan Anthony Hill and Miranda Jene Hill, Walla Walla, Wash.; as well as numerous aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; and cousins. Daughter, Susan Beth, and parents, Ralph and Lois Hill precede him in death.
    Memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Litwiller Funeral Home, 1811 Ashland St., Ashland, Ore., and will be officiated by his sister, Jeannie Arant, from Mt. Laki Presbyterian Church of Klamath Falls, Ore. A potluck open house will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, family encourages donations to the Ashland High School Booster Club in Richard's name, P.O. Box 121, Ashland, OR 97520.
