The Windows in Time history series presents a lecture entitled "Toby Riddle: Pocahontas of the Lava Beds," recounting the life of a Modoc woman who served as an Army interpreter.
The lecturer is Kernan Turner, Southern Oregon Historical Society editor and coordinator of the daily "As It Was" radio feature on Jefferson Public Radio.
Turner will speak noon on Wednesday, April 3, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave., and Wednesday, April 10, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. The hour-long lectures will explore Riddle's role as an Army interpreter during the Modoc War and how she came to be known as Winema.
The free lectures are part of the series presented by the Jackson County Library and the Southern Oregon Historical Society on the first and second Wednesday of each month.
