  • The Ashland Kiwanis Club has recognized Savannah Johnson as its Ashland High School Student of the Month for April. Johnson has lived in Ashland her entire life. She has developed a passion for volunteering and involving herself in the community.
Johnson has been a member of the AHS Key Club (sponsored by Ashland Kiwanis) for four years, during which time she has helped with the Monster Dash, Toys for Tots, and UNICEF programs. For the past two years Johnson has volunteered at the Ashland Community Hospital. Last year, she was involved in the Ford Family Institute's leadership workshop program, where she gained skills and helped to implement a community project with other members.
Johnson has been involved with the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for more than 10 years. As team captain, she organized fundraising events such as car washes, garage sales, bake sales, the community flag football game in honor of Coach K, and large-scale letter campaigns. Johnson was recognized with the Top High School Individual Fundraiser award during the last two Ashland relays.
Her most rewarding volunteer experience has been working in a kindergarten classroom at Helman Elementary every other day, she said. She expects to be an elementary school teacher. Johnson has been accepted at six colleges in Oregon.
Her senior project is participating in an organization named Project Night Night, which was founded in San Francisco. They deliver canvas tote bags filled with a new blanket, stuffed animal, and a children's book to homeless children in community shelters in the bay area. She sews quilts for the tote bags because sewing is a hobby of hers. She plans to deliver similar tote bags to a local shelter in the Rogue Valley.
