The Jackson County Recycling Partnership will collect plastic for recycling from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, at The Expo, Gate No. 1, on Peninger Road, Central Point.
Since 2008, Jackson County Plastic Round-up has been an annual event with collections in Ashland and Central Point each fall. This year, organizers plan a spring round-up at The Expo and a fall round-up at another site. The date and location of the fall round-up haven't been set yet. The event's growing popularity inspired the change, officials said.
Jackson County Plastic Round-up accepts numerous types of plastic not accepted in local curbside programs, including bags of all sizes, baling twine, buckets, bubble wrap, nursery pots, irrigation components, baling twine, tarps, tapes, cassettes, discs, toys, kiddie pools and much more.
A list of acceptable and unacceptable items is posted at www.jcrecycle.org. Participants must pre-sort clean plastic into 3 categories: soft plastic, hard plastic and nursery plastic. Items NOT accepted include vinyl, metal parts, rubber and Styrofoam. Recycling fees are $5 per household; businesses and large loads are $5 per yard.
At the October 2012 event, 83,000 pounds of plastic were collected at the two sites. The volume of plastic recycled during the two-day collection has grown by approximately 20,000 pounds each year for the past three years, officials said.
