A home-schooled Ashlander and an Cascade Christian School student will travel to Salem March 16 to compete in the state's Poetry Out Loud competition.

Alexander Barnes, 18, a partly-home schooled senior representing Ashland High School, is a three-time state runner up in the competition. Barnes also competes in national debate competitions and teaches a poetry class at Ashland Middle School.

Rebekah Ratcliff, 15, of Cascade Christian, is also a softball and volleyball player.

The state competition will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in the Willamette Heritage Center's Spinning Room in Salem.

The state competition winner will go on to represent Oregon in the national competition held April 29 and 30 in Washington, D.C.
