  • An Ashland couple pleaded not guilty to federal charges accusing them of selling online a diluted version of industrial bleach as an elixir for everything from ear aches to cancer.
Defendant Louis Daniel Smith will remained jailed in Spokane, however, while a U.S. District Court judge mulls whether to free him while the case plays out or keep him behind bars as a flight risk.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Cynthia Imbrogno heard arguments by Smith's attorney and federal prosecutors Monday afternoon during a court appearance in Spokane. That is where the couple lived in the late 2000s while operating Project GreenLife on the Internet and selling "Miracle Mineral Supplement" that contained sodium chlorite, which is not approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration for any form of ingestion.
Smith, 42, and 38-year-old Karis Delong face charges of conspiracy, four counts of interstate sales of misbranded drugs and one count of smuggling stemming from an investigation by FDA special agents and U.S. Postal Service investigators.
Codefendant Tammy Olson, 50, of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., faces identical charges for her alleged role in Project GreenLife. Also charged was Olson's husband, 49-year-old Chris Olson, with one count of conspiracy, one count of the interstate sale of a misbranded drug and one count of smuggling.
The OIson's previously pleaded not guilty and were released from custody while the case plays out in U.S. District Court for Eastern Washington.
Delong remains free on bail, but must remain in the Spokane area as part of her release agreement. Court filings did not state when Imbrogno planned to rule on Smith's request for release.
