Tasting Notes: South Stage Cellars

 Posted: 9:00 AM February 14, 2013

People from all over the country will gather in San Francisco this weekend to taste an award-winning wine conveniently available in Ashland.

South Stage Cellars, a family-owned wine producer based in Talent, received five awards at the 2013 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, including a coveted Best of Class for its 2008 Syrah ($27).

Marketing director Porscha Schiller and her crew plan to pour some of the medal-winning wines between 3:30 and 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Ashland Food Co-op, 237 N. First St. Call 541-482-2237 for more information.

South Stage Cellars also received a silver medal for its 2009 Rhapsody ($28), a blend of grenache and syrah with a splash of viognier. The wine producer also received bronze medals for its 2009 Monte Rosa red blend ($22), 2010 Romeo & Juliet white blend ($26) and 2008 Alchemy red blend ($35).

Receiving recognition for a variety of wines is especially important to Michael Moore, South Stage Cellars vineyard manager.

"This lets everyone know that we are consistently making good wine," Moore says, whose family owns Quail Run Vineyards and South Stage Cellars.

The Moores' prize-winning syrah is on the menu at Pasta Piatti and Wiley's World Pasta Shoppe & Eatery in Ashland. It also is available at Harry & David Country Village in Medford, The Jacksonville Inn restaurant and wine shop, and South Stage Cellars' Jacksonville tasting room.

The syrah will be poured along with other gold-medal winners at a public tasting of the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition Saturday, Feb. 16, at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. See www.winejudging.com for more information.
