Eagles avenge loss to Grizzlies, even series

Freshman guard Wood scores 24 points as Eagle Point girls escape Ashland with 15-point victory

Freshman guard Adrienne Wood scored 10 of her game-high 24 points in third quarter to help the Eagle Point girls basketball team bury Ashland as the Eagles evened the Southern Oregon Hybrid 5A season series at one game apiece with a 59-44 win Friday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Sidney May added 19 points and Casie Johnson 11 for the Eagles (15-8), who host Ashland on Feb. 19 in a game that will determine the SOH 5A champion.

The Grizzlies (7-13) were led by sophomore Georgia Williams' 18 points. Hannah Teixeira added seven.

Eagle Point outscored Ashland 19-8 in the third quarter to take a 50-37 lead into the fourth.

"The third quarter really hurt us," Ashland head coach Emily Hesse said, "because that's when they had their push out. We just really fell short in that third quarter."

Ashland has only one game between now and the rematch with Eagle Point — next Friday at home against Grants Pass. The following Tuesday, Ashland and Eagle Point will square off one more time with an automatic playoff berth on the line.

Boys Basketball

Justin Hartman scored 19 points and Eagle Point ran out to a 26-12 halftime lead before rolling to its second win over Ashland and clinching the Southern Oregon Hybrid 5A title.

Cesar Chavez added 11 points and Jorge Quintero nine for the Eagles (13-9), who will go for the series sweep on Feb. 19.

For Ashland (1-18), RJ Atteberry scored eight points and Jack Feinberg added six.
