Comets start fast, rout Grizzlies

Crater boys outscore Ashland 13-0 in first quarter, hand Grizzlies their 17th setback

Crater shut out Ashland in the opening quarter before going up by as many as 34 points in the third before winning the nonconference boys basketball tilt, 63-49, at Mountain Avenue Gym.

The Comets' Cody Dismukes went for 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

Playing sparingly for the Comets (11-9), Connor Lane scored 13 points and Kory Bennett turned in 11 points and four steals. Dean Orozco added five rebounds and five assists.

The Grizzlies (1-17) were led by Gabe Stanley's 11 points followed by Steen Fredrickson's 10. Parker Layton added a team-high 11 rebounds, RJ Atteberry three steals and Quaid Walters four assists for Ashland, which was shut out 13-0 in the opening quarter.

"We ran our offense and got open shots and we just could not knock shots down," Ashland coach Larry Kellems said. "For some reason, we just couldn't make a basket. Finally, in the second quarter, we started finding the hole."

Girls Basketball

CENTRAL POINT — Brittaney Scott's return to the lineup helped Crater snap an eight-game losing streak with a 53-36 win over Ashland at Crater High School.


Scott, who missed five games because of a broken nose, led all scorers with 15 points. The senior guard added six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Becca Heard added 12 points and five rebounds and Emmie Gavin chipped in 10 points and three steals for the Comets (6-13).

The Comets came away with 21 steals

Ashland (7-12) received eight points each from Georgia Williams, Hannah Thornton and Frankie Brookins.
