Local deejays will lay down a danceable beat base for live musicians to accompany during the next Afro-Beat Lounge, at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant and Bar, 35 N. Main St., Ashland.
Alex's Afro-Beat Lounge is the brainchild of Oregon Shakespeare Festival actor Peter Macon and OSF sound-engineering resident and deejay Clive Bean. The idea was inspired by The Vinyl Club's Soul Sundays and big-city nightclubs while Afro-beat music can be sourced to one man, Nigerian multi-instrumentalist Fela Kuti. Kuti combined soul, jazz, Afro-Cuban, Ghanaian and Nigerian highlife influences into a hyper-political, polyrhythmic, funk blend, Macon says.
