 Posted: 2:00 AM January 15, 2013

Gary Einhorn has created five businesses and he had the academic background and entrepreneurial spirit to make them successful.

He started Beardsley's Natural Foods, a distributor and wholesaler of organic, natural and specialty foods in Ashland, in 1988. After he sold it in 2006, the name changed to Oregon Artisan Foods.

Since then, Einhorn has been a business consultant.

About This Series

On the Podium is a series spotlighting Ashland teachers. Send profile ideas to jeastman@dailytidings.com.

He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, with an emphasis in economics and philosophy, and an advanced degree in Knitting Technology from the University of Leicester, Leicester, England.

He has given presentations for the Ashland Soroptimists and University Toastmasters as well as at the Ashland library, Ashland Co-op and Bigham Knoll in Jacksonville.

On Wednesday he will talk about making a business work at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute's Ashland campus.

He has lived in Ashland since 1988, having moved here from Upper Nyack, in the lower Hudson Valley north of New York City.

What are your favorite aspects of Ashland? The mountains; peaceful, slow pace of life; proximity to the ocean; the quality and kindness of the people.

How do you introduce yourself to people attending your presentations? I am Gary Einhorn of Business Consulting Services, a business consultant in private practice and cofacilitator of peer discussion groups of business owners under the umbrella of Thrive.

What fact gets your audience's attention? That I speak from a life of entrepreneurship. I have been there and often use examples from my experiences in creating, owning, managing, buying and selling businesses.

What do you need to be successful? Perseverance, tenacity, ethics and persistence. Be tough-minded, but tender-hearted.

What do you do during your free time? I have a radio show on KSKQ 89.5 FM community radio (I am also the station's business coach). I work out at the Ashland Tennis and Fitness Club and walk daily. I am the president of the University Toastmasters and take classes at OLLI. I also like to study the Enneagram and the Spanish language.

What is left on your bucket list? I want to travel to New Zealand, Mexico and back to England and Scotland where I have lived before. I want to continue to be of service to small- and medium-sized entrepreneurial businesses.

How can we learn more about you? I have a member page on the Ashland Chamber of Commerce website, www.ashlandchamber.com.
