  • Ashland came out a little tentative against Roseburg on Tuesday night and paid the price.
Passing up open looks, the Grizzlies fell behind by double digits early and never recovered as Roseburg rolled to a 52-30 victory at Mountain Avenue Gym.
It also didn't help that the Indians (10-3), who opened the season with eight straight wins, dominated the boards.
"Honestly, we played really good zone defense," Ashland coach Emily Hesse said, "it was just their second-chance points. We struggled blocking out and that's basically what hurt us. Our defense was awesome."
Roseburg ability to track down loose balls was awesome, too, as the Indians broke out to a 21-9 lead at the break before outscoring Ashland 13-3 in the third quarter to win going away. Shelby Snook led Roseburg with 17 points and Ashley Backen added 11.
Ashland sophomore post Michaela Dunn hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 19 points to help the Grizzlies finish strong. They scored more points in the fourth (18) than in the first three quarters combined.
Hesse said many of the same 3-point looks were open earlier in the game as well, but the Grizzlies failed to capitalize.
"We weren't taking those shots in the beginning," she said.
Hesse added that she talked to the Grizzlies after the game about, "just being aggressive. When you're open, shoot the ball, and when you drive, drive hard and drive for a purpose."
Ashland next hosts Yreka next Tuesday.
