A training session for people who want to volunteer at winter shelters for the homeless in Ashland will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at First Presbyterian Church's Calvin Hall, which is at the corner of Siskiyou Boulevard and Walker Street in Ashland.
The training will teach people how to help at a newly approved overnight shelter on Thursdays in Ashland's Pioneer Hall. The training event is open to anyone and is free to attend.
The Ashland City Council last week approved opening the city-owned building as an overnight shelter on Thursdays. The city requires one male volunteer and one female volunteer be present, and that an additional male volunteer be present if there are more than 10 men staying at the shelter. The Rogue Valley Unitarian Fellowship and Temple Emek Shalom agreed to coordinate trained volunteers for the Thursday night shelter.
