Jackson County unemployment rate down only slightly

 Posted: 2:50 PM December 24, 2012

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Jackson County in November lingered at 10.6 percent, roughly the double-digit range it has stuck in for the past year.

The county's unemployment rate was 11.3 percent in November 2011 and 10.7 percent in October 2012, figures compiled by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show.

Total nonfarm payroll employment in the county grew by 530 jobs in November, the Oregon Employment Department reported. Seasonal retail work and the opening of new shops at the Northgate Center contributed to that growth, as did continued hiring in education. Construction and leisure and hospitality sectors saw seasonal job losses.

For the year, the job-creation trend is positive, although gains are small, the employment department reported. The county gained 1,140 nonfarm payroll jobs.
