High winds close Mt. Ashland Ski Area

 Posted: 9:05 AM December 20, 2012

Mt. Ashland is closed today because of high winds, according to the ski park's website.

The mountain's weather report shows 45- to 55-mph winds with 70-mph gusts, along with three inches of snowfall in the past 24 hours.

A high wind warning is in effect until 1 p.m. today. The National Weather Service reports Ashland, Talent and the hills surrounding the Rogue Valley will see winds up to 45 mph with 60 mph gusts. Medford is expected to see winds up to 35 mph with 40- to 50-mph gusts.

"Winds will diminish early this afternoon," the Weather Service said in an advisory this morning.

In addition to the winds, the Oregon Department of The Oregon Department of Transportation reports it is snowing hard and continuously at the Siskiyou Pass. Packed snow is also on the roadways. Motorists heading that direction should carry chains, slow down and allow extra distance between their vehicles and others.
