Licensing dogs offers added benefit

 Posted: 12:10 PM December 18, 2012

Licensed dogs who run away and are picked up by Jackson County Animal Care & Control get free rides home if they have no prior incidents or visits on record in the past year.

Licensed dogs who end up at the shelter also get a free night's stay at the Talent facility, 5595 S. Pacific Highway.

"This financial benefit is our way of saying thank you and rewarding responsible dog owners," a statement on the Jackson County website reads.

Officials note that fees and penalties to reclaim an unlicensed dog from the shelter can add up to $180 or more. Dog licenses, which are required by law throughout the county, cost $20 a year for neutered pets and $30 a year for intact animals. Discounts are available for multi-year licenses and for seniors.
