Elderly woman injured in crash

Wilma McIntyre, 98, remains hospitalized
 Posted: 2:00 AM December 11, 2012

A 98-year-old Talent woman remained hospitalized after her car collided with another at the intersection of Highway 99 and East Rapp Road Sunday morning, police said.

"It was a traffic signal violation on one of them, but they both claimed to have green, and we didn't have any witnesses," said Talent police Cpl. Dave Plummer.

Neither driver was cited, Plummer said, but Wilma McIntyre's 2000 Toyota Camry and Steven Kahae's 2006 Ford F-250 were both towed away from the intersection because of "pretty heavy damage."

Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and wearing seatbelts, Plummer said.

McIntyre remained in Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center Monday in "fair condition," hospital spokesman Grant Walker said.

Kahae, 41, of Talent, was turning into the northbound lanes of Highway 99 from East Rapp Road as McIntyre was headed south on the highway when their vehicles collided at the intersection, Plummer said.

Jackson County Fire District No. 5, Ashland Fire & Rescue and Talent police responded to the scene at about 9 a.m.

Initially, McIntyre was transported to Ashland Community Hospital, but redirected to RRMC shortly after, Plummer said.

Kahae was not injured, Plummer said.

"People need to be paying attention and not be in such a hurry," Plummer said. "The weather isn't much of a factor yet ... there is no ice. Typically, accidents start with a distraction."
