The Ashland Kiwanis Club has recognized two Ashland High School students for its Student of the Month awards. Miles Furuichi was honored for September, and Kim Corey was honored for October.

Furuichi' senior project was working on Habitat of Humanity houses in the Portland area. He participates in both baseball and water polo. He was goalie on two state championship teams. His cumulative GPA is 3.76. Furuichi has been a Fresh Start counselor. He also worked as a baker's assistant and he volunteers at Earth Days. His eventual goal is to work with athletes to minimize sport injuries. One of his primary interests is in the field of health sciences, learning about human anatomy and ways to improve physical conditioning. Another key interest is in biology, learning about the physiology of animals and marine science.

Furuichi is considering either the University of Oregon or UCLA for his undergraduate studies.

Corey's senior project is compiling information about cancer by interviewing cancer patients. She then plans to write and publish a book about her work in this area. She is actively involved in sports programs, having participated in softball for 4 years and volleyball for 2 years. Corey is a tutor at Ashland High School and she has been a student representative for the Advisory Program, on the Global Citizen's Corp, a Fresh Start counselor and a member of the Key Club for three years. Corey also has been a Math Honors Society student for 2 years and a National Honor Society student for 3 years. Her cumulative GPA is 3.99. She coaches YMCA volleyball and enjoys working with younger children. Corey is interested in developing a career in child psychology.

Corey is considering USC, USD, Harvey Mudd, Cal Poly, or the University of Oregon for her undergraduate studies.

Senior students from Ashland High School are honored each month during the school year. Each receives an award certificate and $50 in cash. In May 2013, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will receive a $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis College scholarship.
