  • Southern Oregon University hopes to increase its first to second-year retention rate from just short of 70 percent to the mid 70s by boosting mentor-student interaction among first-year students.
The peer-to-peer mentoring program matches incoming students with successful students. It was started in 2009-10 and has grown to 121 participants, an SOU news release said. There will be an increased push in veteran outreach, pairing soldiers up with other veterans as their mentors
SOU officials said the first-year mentor program also hosts group activities like rafting trips, visits to ScienceWorks, group study sessions, and community service.
