KANSAS CITY — The Royals solidified their rotation Tuesday morning by retaining free-agent Jeremy Guthrie with a three-year contract for $25 million through the 2015 season.

"Three more years in Kansas City!" Guthrie confirmed through his twitter account. "I couldn't be more excited! Thanks to Royals and all the great fans for your support."

Guthrie, 33, who graduated from Ashland High School in 1997, resurrected his career last season by going 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA in 16 starts after joining the Royals in a July 20 trade from Colorado for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez. Guthrie was 3-9 with a 6.35 ERA in 19 games for the Rockies prior to the deal.

Terms of the contract: Guthrie receives $5 million in 2013; $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. The deal contains award bonuses but no performance bonuses.

Guthrie made $8.2 million last season and was believed to be seeking a three-year deal for $32 million-$34 million.

The signing provides the Royals with a second major piece to their 2013 rotation. They previously acquired veteran right-hander Ervin Santana from the Los Angeles Angels in an Oct. 31 trade for minor-league reliever Brandon Sisk.

The Royals did not announce a corresponding roster move to accommodate Guthrie but should do so later today in a series of moves prior to the 11 p.m. deadline for filing reserve lists.

Guthrie averaged 198 innings over the last five years, which makes him the type of workhorse the Royals sought in constructing their 2013 rotation. He is 55-77 with a 4.28 ERA in 210 games, including 183 starts, over his eight-year career.
