SOU receives national attention for clean energy

 Posted: 2:00 AM November 21, 2012

The U.S. Department of Energy mentioned Southern Oregon University in an episode of its ongoing video series, "Clean Energy in Our Community."

SOU's investments in renewable energy and sustainability were mentioned and commended by department officials.

"Southern Oregon University is a leading example of how local institutions and communities can help lead the way in making sure that America wins the global clean energy race, while creating good local jobs and protecting the environment," U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said in a prepared statement.

SOU officials said they hope to become carbon-neutral by 2050. They are currently using a 56-kilowatt solar array that produces more than 70,000 kilowatt hours of energy annually.
