  • The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in Jackson County fell marginally in October to 10.6 percent from 10.7 percent in September and improved from 11.5 percent in October 2011.
Figures compiled by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show payroll employment rose by 830 jobs in October. Over the year, the county has lost 120 nonfarm payroll jobs — reversing the estimated over-the-year gains reported over the previous seven months. Private sector employment was flat over the year, with the losses occurring in government employment.
In October 2011, there were 94,370 people on local payrolls. That number dropped to 93,277 in September and fell to 92,674 in October. However, the workforce declined by nearly 2,000 during the past 12 months.
Over the year, retail trade has picked up 390 positions, manufacturing 120 and construction 100. Leisure and hospitality are 70 jobs ahead, while mining and logging picked up 60 as did financial activities. Professional and business services, however, declined by 360 positions.
