Beryl Della Lindgren Pate, 97, passed away at her daughter's home in Ashland, Ore. Sunday, November 11, 2012. Beryl was born March 31, 1915, to Arthur E. Lindgren and Winifred Northrup Lindgren in Boyd County, Neb. She was the oldest of five children, and grew up on her parents' farm. She attended a one-room elementary school in Nebraska, followed by high school in Fairfax, S.D. After graduating South Dakota State Teachers College during the Depression, Beryl taught elementary school for three years in Gregory, S.D., where she had a class of 48 pupils and earned $630 a year.
Beryl married Leonard L. Pate in 1941, and moved to Butte, Neb., where Leonard was superintendent of schools. Their daughter, Karen, was born while they lived in Butte. In 1944, the family moved to Oregon, first to Heppner, then in 1953, to Prairie City. In both places, Beryl taught elementary school and Leonard was a school administrator. Upon Leonard's retirement in 1967, they moved to Klamath Falls, where Beryl taught for another 11 years. She retired in 1978, having taught for 36 years. She greatly enjoyed teaching and took much pride in her work educating children. In 2005, Beryl moved to Mountain Meadows Retirement Community in Ashland in order to be closer to her daughter.
Beryl was preceded in death by Leonard, her husband of 51 years; her sisters, Orel (Ray) Walth and Cloeen (Oscar) Anderson; and brother, Donald (Donna) Lindgren. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Pate Scott, of Ashland; granddaughter, Jennifer Pate Scott (Will Garber), of Portland; brother, Darold (Jackie) Lindgren, of Butte, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
At Beryl's request, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to any public library.
