Subscription services company hit by Better Business Bureau complaints

A Rogue Valley-based company is under fire for sending questionable magazine subscription billings and renewal notices to consumers nationwide, the Better Business Bureau reports.

In some cases, subscriptions were already pre-paid directly to publishers or never ordered in the first place, officials said in a news release.

The Better Business Bureau has received 130 complaints for Liberty Publishers Service Inc., of Medford and White City, since September 2011. The nonprofit consumer advocacy group reports that 120 of those complaints were resolved with the bureau's help. In nine cases, the business made a good-faith effort, but customers weren't satisfied, and one complaint was not resolved.

The company is operating under more than 50 different business names, including Publishers Payment, Publishers Billing, Circulation Billing Services, United Publishers Services and other variations.

The BBB offers tips on unexpected mailings, postcards or invoices:

u Check previously paid invoices to see if subscription details such as publication titles, quantity, pricing, expiration dates and senders' information match. If suspicious, contact the original distribution companies directly.

u Scan notices carefully for advertisement disclaimers. Avoid inadvertently accepting new subscriptions, but before dismissing offers, see if roommates or family members have made the purchases.

u If you are not subscribing, you are not obligated to pay. Contact senders and opt out to reduce unwanted mail. Legitimate businesses should willingly provide cancellation policies or terms upfront. Get written confirmation of cancellations and consider sending cancellation requests by certified mail.
