CALDWELL, Idaho — For the third time this season Stephanie Carr found the net in overtime to give Southern Oregon a victory as the Raiders edged College of Idaho 1-0 Friday afternoon.
The win improves Southern Oregon to 9-5-2 overall and 5-2-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, while College of Idaho falls to 5-7-1 and 4-4. The Raiders move one step closer to a CCC Tournament berth with 16 conference points. Southern Oregon closes out the 2012 regular season Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. matchup against Eastern Oregon.
"This is a really good result," SOU head coach Jon Clement said. "We had to persevere in difficult conditions, but we stayed with the idea and were confident that we could keep generating chances and eventually one would go in and that's what happened."
Carr scored her 13th goal of the season and sixth game-winner of the year in the 98th minute after the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation. The SOU career goal leader had a one-on-one shot blocked by the C of I goalkeeper, but Carr gathered in the rebound and sent it into the open net to clinch the win. She previously scored overtime game-winners against Warner Pacific and Fresno Pacific this season.
The Raider offense pressured the College of Idaho defense and goalkeeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph throughout, outshooting the Coyotes 20-7 in the match. Holmes-Joseph tallied eight saves while playing the entire match in the net for C of I.
Carr led SOU with 10 shots, including six on goal. Kelsey Clement started in goal for the Raiders before Katelyn Allen took over in the second half and played through the overtime period. Bri Blair was the only C of I player to finish with more than one shot, tallying two in the match.
"College of Idaho has some very good players, and they definitely caused some problems at times during the game," Clement said. "Our ability to work our way out of a pickle was very good today. We're thrilled with the victory but we know we can't rest. We have a hard game Sunday and the task is not over."
