  • Mrs. Lopez was born August 6, 1918, in Carlisle, Ind., Sullivan County, Haddon Township, to Irvin Ernest Hume and Lily Glen Campbell. She was raised in Carlisle and graduated from Carlisle High School in 1936. She graduated from the Union Hospital School of Nursing in 1939, and completed her post-graduate work at the Chicago Lying-In Hospital in 1941. In 1955, she earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing education from the University of Redlands, and a master's degree in maternal-child health in 1965, from Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Calif.
    On June 25, 1950, she married Louis C. Lopez, who preceded her in death on April 30, 1991.
    She enlisted in the United States Navy on March 8, 1944, and was discharged on March 8, 1948. She served at Great Lakes, Ill.; Miami Beach Dependent Hospital, Miami Beach, Fla.; the Naval Air Station, Key West, Fla.; and the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.
    Her hobbies included classical piano for over 20 years, Duplicate Bridge Club, knitting, singing in the choir, attending Curves, quilting, and caring for her dogs.
    She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where she initiated the Giving Tree, organized annual rummage sales, knitted for needy children, and helped with the food bank.
    Survivors include her children, Susan M. Lopez, Steven Paul (John) Lopez, both of Ashland, and Carolyn L. (Lopez) Melcher, and her husband, Eugene, of Redlands, Calif.; grandchildren, Natalie A. (Melcher) Johnson, of Redlands, Ellen S. Crouch, of Austin, Texas, Graham P. Melcher, of San Francisco, Calif., Melissa N. Melcher, of Redlands, and Camden L. Lopez, of San Mateo, Calif.; and great-grandchild, Kylie May Johnson (born March 9, 2012), of Redlands.
    In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Elizabeth Crable and Thomas William Hume.
    The funeral for Frances Josephine Hume Lopez will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 3, 2012, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. 2nd St., Ashland, Ore. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford, Ore. A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Friday, November 2, at the LitwillerSimonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Friends of Music, in support of music ministries.
