Bill Slack passed away October, 19, 2012, at his home in Ashland. Bill was born October 11, 1924, in Ashland, Ore. He was the son of Jessie Vivian Inlow and Lynn Slack. Bill recently celebrated his 88th birthday which included a small party and a surprise visit from his grandson, Ryan.
Bill was multi-generation resident of the Ashland area. Along with three generations of his family, he attended Lincoln grade school in Ashland. He graduated from Talent High School in 1942, where he met Ruth Mae Perdue. Bill and Ruth married February 18, 1946. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before her passing in 2011.
During WWII, Bill was a member of the United States Navy where he served as a Boatswain's mate second class on the U.S.S. Otus. His ship served in the Pacific theater. He had many interesting stories and photos from the South Pacific.
Upon Bill's return from WWII, he and Ruth married and began raising their family. They had two sons, Lonny and Gary. Bill worked for more than 40 years at Provost's Furniture. He always said he must have sold a piece of furniture or floor covering for nearly every house in Ashland.
He was a 61-year member of the Ashland Elks Club and served as their exalted ruler in 1968-69. The most memorable event of Bill's year as exalted ruler was a devastating fire at the Club. Bill remembered fondly the Club's members, local merchants, and the community at large who helped the Club rebuild.
During Bill's retirement years he traveled to Alaska with his sons on five occasions for fishing and sight-seeing. One trip included driving the Alcan Highway. His Alaska trips were a highlight of his life. Bill and Ruth were avid sports fans and often attended SOU home games. Another highlight of his life was his only grandchild, Ryan.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Ruth. He is survived by his older brother, W. Karl Slack, of Jacksonville; his sons, Lonny (Sue) of Ashland and Gary (Sharon) of Talent; as well as his grandson, Ryan (Antonella) of Carnelian Bay, Calif.
