"Interesting stories" are at the center of The Bylines' art-pop repertoire and its debut, self-titled album released earlier this year.
The Portland-based project is fronted by vocalist Marianna Thielsen and pianist Reece Marshburn, who tour as a duo but play with a seven-piece band at home.
The Bylines, formerly called Marianna and the Baby Vamps, changed its name in January as it began playing less Motown and retro pop and more originals.
Their new album illustrates the band's story-driven music, which Thielsen describes as "pop but with more sophistication and jazz harmonies thrown in."
Marshburn, who majored in jazz studies at Western Washington University, and Thielsen, who majored in musical theater at the University of Northern Colorado, collaborate on the lyrics and arrangements.
The pair will perform a free show at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at Liquid Assets, 96 N. Main St., Ashland.
