Local jug band Stereotyped turns bluegrass black by adding punk-rock and metal to the mix.

The band — Matt Hendrix on banjo, Larry Grose on bass and Julie Jankowski on trumpet, harmonicas, percussion, bells and bullhorn — plays at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Caldera Tap House, 31 Water St., Ashland. The cover to the show is $5.

With the help of Apple's Garage Band application and pianist Perry Fjellman, the quartet packaged its original, hillbilly soundscape on the aptly titled "Black to Our Grass Roots," recorded from a home studio.

The album features Jankowski's dark lyrics set to eclectic arrangements of ragtime, Gypsy jazz, country, punk-rock and, of course, bluegrass.
