Ashminster Mutt Show

 Posted: 2:00 AM September 20, 2012

Grizzly Peak Winery is adding a little "woof" to wine and food offerings.

Ashminster Mutt Show, a Westminster Kennel Club dog-competition parody is planned from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, under the winery's oak trees at 1600 E. Nevada St., Ashland.

Guests are encouraged to bring blankets and dogs on leashes to enjoy the setting. Nearby, are 8,000 vines across 15 acres. Eleven different Bordeaux and Rhone grape varieties are ripening, readying to be crushed and made into wine, from merlot ($18 a bottle for the 2010 vintage) to syrah ($22 for the 2010 vintage).

Grizzly Peak owner Virginia Silbowitz says she also will pour 2011 Rumor ($18), an easy-sipping roussanne-marsanne blend. All wines will be available for $5 per glass. Alyssa Warner of Fresco Mobile Kitchen will serve hot and cold dishes and desserts made from locally produced ingredients.

Trish Glose of KTVL Channel 10 will judge the dogs and award ribbons for Best in Show, best trick, costume and canines based on size. Registration to enter the contest is from noon to 1 p.m. The cost is $5 per dog.

Admission is $10, free for kids 12 and under. The event benefits Ashland Supportive Housing and Community Outreach, which operates three residences in town for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The group also has bed-and-breakfast respite for caregivers.

The dog show makes sense, says Sue Crader of Ashland Supportive Housing and Community Outreach, because the group provides dog therapy for residents.

"They throw balls to the dogs at the dog park," she says, adding that all kinds of dogs can be trained for the job. "Dogs do not have to be a certain a type, but they have to be registered as service dogs and have the right state of mind."
