Raider athletes net CCC honors

 Posted: 2:00 AM September 11, 2012

With all four fall sports programs active last weekend for the first time in 2012, five Southern Oregon student-athletes earned conference recognition as the Cascade Collegiate Conference announced the Red Lion athletes of the week Monday afternoon.

Eric Avila and Summer Cano were named cross country runners of the week, volleyball players Haley Kasler and Renee Yomtob were honored at their respective positions and Sydney Paulsen was named women's soccer offensive player of the week. All five athletes were so honored for the first time.

Also, the Raiders were garnered team-of-the-week honors in volleyball.

Avila began his sophomore season with the individual title at Saturday's Humboldt State Invite. He finished the 8-kilometer race in 24:48, leading the men's unit to the overall team title. The top-ranked Raiders are seeking their fifth consecutive conference crown.

Cano won the women's race by more than 27 seconds, and her winning time of 22:00 helped the 13th-ranked women's team finish second behind NCAA Division II No. 22 Humboldt State.

Kastler was named hitter of the week and Yomtob was named libero of the week after the pair helped Southern Oregon win all three of its conference matches.

Kastler reached double-digit kills in all three matches, including a career-high 19 in a come-from-behind road win over Warner Pacific, and 11 kills without an error against Concordia on Saturday. Yomtob, meanwhile, averaged almost six digs per set in the Raiders' three wins.

Paulsen scored three goals and added two assists as the women's soccer team posted a 2-1 record. Southern Oregon defeated Holy Names and Simpson before falling to No. 18 Concordia (Calif.) on Sunday.

The volleyball team is 3-0 in the CCC and 7-6 overall.
