Memorial tourney was a success

Memorial tourney was a success

On Jan. 2, 2008, our sons, Nick and Max Gordon, were traveling on Highway 62, returning from a snowboarding trip to Bend. We thought it would be a good way for them to "lose themselves" after losing their "Grampy" on Dec. 26, 2007.

We'll never know exactly what happened, but there was a terrible accident and Nick was gone instantly. Max was in critical care at Rogue Valley Medical Center. He had a traumatic head injury, a ruptured spleen and a collapsed lung. He developed a staph infection and pneumonia during his nine days in the hospital.

Our communities of the Rogue Valley and the Scott Valley helped us through a very difficult time, bringing food to our family, keeping friends and family aware of Max's condition, visiting Michelle's mom who had just moved into a foster home the night before, and lots of hugs. We are so very grateful and feel blessed to be a part of your family of community. Nick attended schools in Scott Valley through his junior year of high school. Nick had the deciding vote, in a family decision, to move closer to his aging grandparents and attend Ashland High School for his 2005 senior year. This past weekend, Aug. 17, 18 and 19, we held our "First Annual Memorial Mushball Tournament" at the Little League Park in Fort Jones, Calif. We had 11 teams compete to win the championship T-Shirt and a home run derby and a raffle to raise money. Thanks to the support and generosity of our communities we were able to raise over $5,000 to provide an annual athletic scholarship for a senior at Etna High School in the memory of Nick Gordon. Our goal is to make this a perpetual scholarship.

We owe special Thanks to Jessie (Stacher) Earles, who brought the idea to us and did much of the work to make the weekend such a success. And her husband, Travis, because she couldn't do it without him, and he cooks a great tri-tip!

Thanks also to Nick's friends, Haley (Hayden) Moyles for the picture poster and helping wherever she was needed, and Jamie Clapp for her graphic design for the first T-Shirt. Thanks also to our good friends, Barry and Chris Filliponi, Doug and Julie Beers and the Jarvis Family for their help in so many ways, The weekend would not have been so special with out all the classmates traveling from afar to make this a weekend that would make Nick feel as special as he was. Thank you for keeping him in your heart.

Thanks are also in order to our donors for their generous donations for our raffle. We raised $633 toward the scholarship. Thank you to: Pacific Power and our brothers and sisters who work for Pacific Power, Omar's, Porter's, The Oak Tree, The Wild Goose, Centennial Golf Course, Oak Knoll Golf Course and Kathy at Expressions at the Regency. Thanks to Travis and Jessie Earles for the donation of half a pig, and Barry Filliponni for the (always successful!) salmon drift boat fishing trip. We will be holding the annual tournament on the last weekend in June in honor of Nick's birthday.

We look forward to seeing you all again next year, for fun and fellowship and fundraising at the second annual Nick Gordon Memorial Mushball Tournament. If there is any interest in donating to the Nick Gordon Athletic Scholarship, donations can be mailed to Scott Valley Scholarships, c/o Scott Valley Bank, 424 Main St., Etna, CA 96027. Donations are tax deductible.
