Lewis R. Constable, 62, passed away August 7, 2012, at Oregon Health and Science University.
Lew was born in Bend, Ore., February 10, 1950 to Nellie and Clayton Constable. In 1959, he moved with his parents to Brothers, Ore., where his family operated the general store, restaurant and post office. While helping in the family business, Lew graduated from Bend Senior High and earned his Associates degree in Flight Technology from Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore. He worked as a flight instructor at Gibson Air Service in Bend and Rogue Valley Skyways in Medford, Ore. On August 29, 1971, he married Marilyn Moffitt, who survives. Together they operated the Brothers Store until 1978, when they sold the business and moved to Burns, Ore., where Lew worked for Pulliam Motors selling cars. In 1981, Lew returned to school which led the family first to Portland, Ore., then to Medford as he worked for various companies, repairing photocopiers. In 1987, Lew again returned to school and earned his Masters degree in education. After a year at Hedrick Middle School teaching English and Drama, and a year at Grants Pass High teaching automotive technology, Lew found his home with Three Rivers School District, teaching English and History at Lincoln Savage Middle School in Murphy, Ore. for many years. In 2011, his continuing desire to make a difference in the lives of young people led him to The Youth Correction Facility in Grants Pass, Ore. where he taught English.
Lew had many interests and hobbies. He played the guitar and bagpipes, and was a member of several choirs in the Rogue Valley. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and being at home where he could work on old cars and radios. Most recently, he became proficient in reloading bullets and spent time at the Medford rifle range shooting targets.
In addition to his wife, Lew is survived by his daughter, Amanda (Shawn) Wilson of Medford, Ore.; son, Clayton (Alisha) of San Diego, Calif.; three granddaughters, Katie Joos of Medford, and Olivia and Elise Constable of San Diego; and his brother, Donald (Colleen) Clarke of Dallas, Texas.
A celebration of Lew's life will be at 2:00 p.m., August 18, at 2595 Stewart Avenue, Medford, Ore.
